What is Pedodontics? Specialist dentists who perform all kinds of dental treatments and preventive dentistry applications applied to children from birth until the age of 12-13, when all the milk teeth in the mouth have completed their changes, and who have received special training in this field, are called Pedodontists, and this branch of dentistry specialization is called Pedodontis. What is the Purpose of Pedodontics? The primary goal of pedodontics is to treat existing problems, as well as to find the source of these problems and take precautions to prevent them from occurring. The procedures applied for this purpose are called Preventive Dentistry. Preventive dentistry includes regulating eating habits, correcting bad eating habits, providing training on oral and dental hygiene, procedures that can be applied to teeth such as local fluoride and fissure sealants, and regular check-ups. Importance of Milk Teeth In our country, most people do not give importance to milk teeth because they are teeth that change when the time comes. However, more serious problems are encountered in the future due to milk teeth lost at an early age. Therefore, the importance and functions of milk teeth should be known very well. The primary function of milk teeth is to ensure that the child is properly nourished. In addition, the proper development of speech depends on the presence of milk teeth. Milk teeth protect the space they cover for the permanent tooth that will replace them and guide the permanent tooth as it erupts. When a baby tooth is lost early, this natural space-holding function is also eliminated. Decay in baby teeth creates infection centers in the child and also makes it difficult to feed. Baby tooth losses can negatively affect the child's appearance and speech, and may cause psychological problems in the child.
